TAILORED FABRIC FORMWORK
Keith’s work applies tailoring and fabric manipulation techniques appropriated from the fashion and textiles industry to sculpt architectural column prototypes from concrete cast in a flexible fabric formwork.
His research provides a new language and paradigm for the understanding and manipulation of innovative formwork methods. These deliver form and material efficiency for creating refined organic forms for concrete architectural elements. The work adds a new dimension to the discourse on flexible fabric formworks. It offers a creative response to building element creation combining knowledge from architecture, engineering, and the fashion and textile industries.
The prototypes presented here exhibit tailoring techniques, such as darts, as well as the innovative use of internal webs to provide restraint to the concrete during the liquid phase of casting.
